(Photo by Betty Dunn) STEPHENSON-HARRIS CEMETERY, is located in the southwest corner of Grimes County. From Highway 6 travel east on FM 2 to CR 323, turn south on CR 323; where CR 323 and CR 325 intersect go east on CR 325 about 1 mile to gate at #5347 CR 325. The cemetery is about 1/3 of a mile south of the road on private property. Permission is required to visit. Note two burials occurred in 2008. Hollis F. Harris, son of Alga Green “Pete” and Susie (Danford) Harris, born 3 Jan 1922; died 3 Mar 2008 at West Columbia, Texas. Ila Louise Harris Marshall, wife of Winifred Lafayette (Mutt) Marshall, born 1919; died 17 Aug 2008 at Navasota, Texas. Other burials: James Bell Stephenson, born 13 Oct 1820 in Georgia/Florida; died 28 Sep 1905, Confederate Captain, Company I-20 Regiment, Texas Infantry. (Tall marker on left) Recorder’s notes: Stephenson was but six years old when his parents James and Amelia Bell Stephenson came to Texas and were granted a league of land innorthern Austin County. The family later relocated in Grimes County purchasing Benjamin Babbitt’s land grant and the area now known as the Benjamin Babbitt survey. As a young man, James Bell Stephenson was under the command of Captain Bird in which Bird was killed in the Bird Creek Indian Fight. He later served under General Somerville and Captain Bogart in the spring of 1842 when Texas was invaded by Mexico. While serving as a Confederate Captain at Camp Groce (near Hempstead) during the Civil War he wrote a letter to his wife Melissa in July of 1862 of which a copy appears in the Grimes County Heritage and History book of 1982. Melissa Jane Maxwell, wife of James Bell Stephenson, daughter of Thomas Maxwell and Clarkia Williamson Maxwell and brother of Waller County leader William Maxwell, born 19 Jul 1826; died 31 May 1866, following the birth of twins who both died within months. (Tall marker on right) Melissa is the first known to be buried in this cemetery. Oliver Stephenson, born 29 Mar 1866; died 19 Jun 1866. Olive Stephenson, born 29 Mar 1866; died 14 Nov 1866. |
Washington Green Harris, born 1856; died 1938. Harris’s parents are buried in the previously mentioned W. G. Harris cemetery on Grimes County Road 304/302.
Louisa Stephenson Harris, wife of Washington Green Harris and daughter of James Bell and Melissa Stephenson, born 6 Oct 1861; died 1943. Alga Green “Pete” Harris, son of W. G. and Louisa Harris, born 10 Sep 1898; died 7 Aug 1950. Susie Loraine Danford Harris, wife of Alga Harris, and daughter of John A. and Clara Danford of Courtney, Tx., born 17 Oct 1899; died 10 Jan 1990. Winifred Lafayette (Mutt) Marshall, born 19 Sep 1913; died 2 Nov 1978, husband of Ila Louise Harris. Ricky Dale Harris, newborn son of Winifred and Ila Marshall, born 30 April 1949; died 1 May 1949. Cynthia Dawn Harris, daughter of Jimmy Dale Harris, born 22 Mar 1959; died 27 Mar 1959. Harris Marshall, a descendant, who lives within a stone’s throw of the Stephenson-Harris Cemetery, says that there are three Yellow Fever victims buried in this cemetery. The family, today unknown and unnamed, was traveling through the area when members fell ill and died. The Stephensons graciously allowed them to be buried in the cemetery. |
