Scott and White Clinic System: The Conroe Connection
by Robin Montgomery
The Scott & White Healthcare program is a fully integrated, non-profit collaborative system with 12 hospitals, two nursing homes and more than sixty clinics providing care to residents of a 29,000 square mile service
area across Central Texas. It is the largest multi-practice facility in Texas and one of the nation’s largest multi-specialty group practice systems. Within the purview of the system are over 13,000 employees and 900 physicians and scientists. A major player in the growth and development of this system was a graduate of Conroe High School in 1952.
This Conroe graduate received his Doctor of Medicine Degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. After a subsequent stint in the military and in private practice, it was on to the headquarters of Scott &
White at Temple where soon he became head of the Department of Radiology. Among his accomplishments while in that position was spearheading the creation of the Department of Family Medicine. This event fostered a thriving multi-clinic group practice unlike any other in the state of Texas. The key innovation was in networking, enabling each physician and provider access to up-to-the-minute medical information allowing the full implementation of “Evidence-Based Medicine.”
In 1992, this Conroe native moved from head of radiology to become President of the entire Scott & White Healthcare System. He served in that position until 1997. Since then, he has gradually merged into a working retirement. Among his accomplishments along the way, he has been a professor of high merit at Texas A&M University’s College of Medicine, including holding the position of chair of the Department of Radiology.
In 1999, his impact reached to London, England. Here his name became associated with a perpetual History of Medicine Research Fellowship awarded to a deserving fourth year student in the research of medicine in London. He is also a devotee of the history of medicine in Texas, having conducted seminars on the subject in numerous
forums.
And this graduate of Conroe High in 1952, where he was all state in band, has a passion for the history of Montgomery County. His name is Dr. John Lester Montgomery, known affectionately to his many Conroe friends as
“Johnny.”
Dr. John Montgomery is married to his Conroe High School sweetheart, Alma Joyce Clanton. The couple has two
sons and a daughter and numerous grandchildren. The passion and spirit for service to humankind forged in the historical rhythms of nineteen forties and fifties Conroe has borne great fruit through the multiple endeavors of John Montgomery, M.D., one of Conroe’s favorite sons.
