located off Grimes County Road 302/304 two and one-half miles east of Highway 362 abutting up to a power line easement on the right and only about fifty feet off the road. This cemetery is typical of many of the regional early burial grounds of our premier settlers in the 1800s. I revisited this cemetery during the winter of 2012. It will soon be irretrievable with the growth of young sapling loblolly pines among the grave markers.
On October 21, 2007, I first found this cemetery by only noticing gravestones barely visible in the weeds and seedling pine trees. Only six grave markers were able to be read with two other stones in crumbles including one that still had the faded Grimes County Confederate Grey’s flag stuck in the ground that this organization places on Civil War Veterans graves in January in honor of General Robert E. Lee’s birthday. I found this cemetery only because a resident a few miles away gave me explicit directions. The earliest burial visible was in 1888. The 1880 U. S. Census lists 19 Childres as residents of Precinct 6, Grimes County, Texas, including William Childre and his wife Mary A., the eldest buried in the Childre cemetery, and were both born in Georgia. A son, O. I. (Iverson) Childre and his wife Fannie, also buried in this cemetery, were both also born in Georgia. The 1910 U. S. Census lists O. I. Childre as Ivy and Fannie as Frances. There are several Childre burials in Navasota’s Oakland Cemetery. One has to assume they may be related. The graves recorded were:
Lee Childre, born 14 Jul 1872; died 21 Nov 1898 Lonnie Childre, born 11 Jan 1867; died 27 May 1908 with an inscription on the stone of: “None knew thee but to love thee.” Mary A. Childre, inscribed with “In Loving Memory”, born 18 Apr 1817; died 6 May 1907, and also inscribed, “Sleep, Mother dear, And take the rest. God called thee home, He thought it best.” William Childre, the dates too worn to read. In 1998, John Maxwell’s record shows dates as born 30 May 1819; died 25 May 1888. O. I. Childre, inscribed “Husband”, born 22 Jan 1845, died 16 Jan 1923, “Age 77 years, 11 months, 24 days.” Fannie Childre, inscribed “Wife”, born 20 May 1846; died 30 Aug 1930, Age 84 years, 3 months, 10 days.” In 1998 Maxwell also had the following names but no markers were found in 2007: Purley Childre, born 23 Apr 1888; died 30 Sept 1895 Loransy Henson, 1911-1955 Another foot stone found at that time was marked M.
